It is the belief of the Oakville Parent-Child Centre that parents/caregivers are their children’s first and most influential teachers and that the early years lay the foundation for children’s success in school and in life. The Lunch & Learn program is designed with sensitivity to schedules and requirements of working parents. The curriculum of the Lunch & Learn Program will provide the working parent with support and information on their developing child. To help parents understand what to expect during each stage of their child’s development and offer parents practical ways to encourage learning, manage challenging behaviour, and most importantly, promote strong parent-child relationships.

The Corporate Connection

Research from the Child Care Education Foundation, says that today, it costs Canada $2.5 billion every year for remedial education because of delayed interventions or early negative experiences. Work – family conflicts cost businesses another $4.7 billion a year.

Proactive parent involvement policies and practices need to be put in place within the work environment. Parents need to know that their employers are willing to support and encourage them as they seek to implement change. Supporting parent and family involvement need not be expensive, but financial resources as well as moral support improve chances of success.

Lunch & Learn Programs are an inexpensive, yet extremely valuable method of educating parents, and the benefits to the employer are ten fold. When corporate policy makers make parent involvement and education a priority, their actions and the support systems they provide reflect their commitment.

It is time for employers to provide training programs which help to eliminate and make a difference with those triggers of stress – not only with employees’ workplace related skills, but with “quality of life” issues that affect employees both in and outside of the workplace. When most working Canadians are asked what their most pressing concern is, the response is the care of, or being absent from their child.

The Lunch & Learn Program will:
• Offer Parenting information to all corporate employees
• Help to revive employee moral
• Help employees to deal and cope with balancing family
   and work
• Improve employee loyalty
• Improve employee productivity
• Show the corporation as a business that cares about its
   employees and community.

“When we invest in families and in our young citizens –
we are investing in keeping our economy strong
and competitive.”
Charlie Coffee, RBC
